Veterans United Foundation funds Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri’s ‘Man Up’ Campaign for second year

Columbia, Mo. – The Veterans United Foundation is giving Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri (BBBSCMO) a $25,000 grant to continue the ‘Man Up’ male volunteer recruitment and training campaign. The campaign is critical in providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better.

“Serving as a BBBSCMO board member has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my life,” said Bryant Chambly, loan officer at Veterans United Home Loans and committee member of Veterans United Foundation. “This program has a positive and measurable impact on the lives of the youth we serve. I am incredibly happy and proud of our foundation for supporting this great cause.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri serves more than 500 children each year. Their goal is to foster one-to-one ‘matches’ between youth facing adversity (‘Littles’) and caring adult mentors (‘Bigs’). Bigs introduce Littles to enriching life experiences, advocate for their well-being and provide Littles with the support they are often missing in their family lives.

Since the ‘Man Up’ campaign’s launch in mid-2016, BBBSCMO has recruited, trained, matched and provided ongoing guidance to 69 male mentors through the new initiative.

At any given time, more than 100 children in mid-Missouri are on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri’s waiting list due to a shortage in volunteer mentors. Boys awaiting mentors consistently comprise more than 65 percent or more of the waiting list. Currently, 67 boys in mid-Missouri are waiting for their future Big Brothers to volunteer. Unfortunately, the lack of male mentors is a nationwide trend. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Missouri with backing from the Veterans United Foundation is committed to bucking that trend locally.
